Although a bit late, I recently discovered and got obsessed with Community, a TV show airing for 4 seasons now and which in January will air its 5th season. Community is considered a show full of meta-humor and (constant) pop culture references that has gained a loyal, cult audience. For me, it’s the witty humor, the cinema and TV references and the characters. Oh, the characters! This show has managed to introduce us to really cult characters that you simply cannot resist. The story is simple (?): Jeff, a suspended lawyer, is obliged to go to college, in order to get his degree and therefore return to practicing law. He attends Greendale Community College , where he meets a series of different characters (Britta, Abed, Troy, Annie, Shirley and Pierce), who all together form a study group and in the end a family, despite their varying ages, backgrounds, and personalities. Other characters that play part in the show, is the hilarious Dean, who regards them in general (and Jeff in particular) as his favorite students, even going so far as to visit their study room to tell them about a fire that has broken out before he alerts the rest of the school – always wearing a crazy outfit. Each member of the group has several personality flaws that are often highlighted in various ways that play off the show's idiosyncratic humor. The show features Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Ken Jeong (from the Hangover franchise), Jim Rash and the veteran comedian Chevy Chase. The 4th season suffered the absence of the show’s creator and writer Dan Harmon, leading to a smaller series of episodes, less successful than the rest of the seasons, but thankfully, he returns for season 5, giving comfort to the loyal Community fans. And trust me, Community has really loyal fans: when the show was in danger of cancellation, they formed web campaigns in social media with names such as #sixseasonsandamovie (watch the show and you’ll get it), #SaveCommunity, #OccupyNBC. Seriously, a show definitely worth discovering - see for yourselves with a sneak peek video of season 1!
